Apple Watch Series 3


The Apple Watch Series 3 is Apple's newest smartwatch, which has been in stores since September 2017. This is Apple's first smartwatch with built-in barometer for measuring altitude differences, its own 4G connection and spoken feedback via Siri. There are two versions with and without 4G.

The Apple Watch Series 3 is the third generation of the Apple Watch and is the successor to the Apple Watch Series 2. This new smartwatch is packed with convenient features like using apps, tracking sporting activities, and receiving notifications. The watch is waterproof so you can swim. The biggest innovation is the advent of a special 4G model, which is only available in a limited number of countries.

The Apple Watch 3 has some improvements over the second model:
  • Faster processor: The powerful dual-core S3 chip allows apps to load faster.
  • Barometer: The built-in barometric altimeter now measures height differences, which may be useful for sports functions.
  • Enhanced W2 chip: new wireless W2 chip with faster data, improved battery life and better data security.
  • Bluetooth 4.2: slightly improved performance via Bluetooth.
  • Siri speaks: thanks to the faster chip, Siri can answer now if you ask questions.
  • AirPower-Suitable: Only Series 3 is charged with Apple's future AirPower Charging Mat.

The special version with built-in eSim can connect to a 4G network independently. This model is not yet available in the Netherlands and Belgium. Other features available only on the 4G version such as streaming of Apple Music and the special Explorer dial are therefore not available.


The Apple Watch Series 3 has deteriorated at one point from the Series 2: the backside is made of black ring composite around the heartbeat sensor. Previously, this series 2 was made of ceramic with metal rings.

The announcement of the Apple Watch Series 3 took place in the Steve Jobs Theater on September 12, 2017. The announcement immediately emphasized the main new feature, namely its own 4G connection. This allows you to call, send messages, use apps, and sport even when you're out of range of your iPhone or Wi-Fi network. Sports features were also highlighted on Apple Watch 3. In appearance, the Apple Watch Series 3 looks as good as its predecessor. He keeps his eye-catching rectangular design with the Digital Crown and a button on the right side and he has the same dimensions as the Series 2.

The Apple Watch Series 3 features the faster dual-core S3 processor with built-in GPS. This faster processor, among other things, means that Siri works a lot faster and can also really talk back to the Apple Watch. The watch still includes a built-in heart rate monitor and a pedometer; There comes a height meter in the Series 3. For Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz only) and Bluetooth 4.2, the Series 3 includes a new Apple chip: the W2. The antenna for the (3G and) 4G connection is built into the display.

The Apple Watch 3 screen is identical to that of the Apple Watch Series 2. It is a second generation OLED Retina display with a brightness of 1000 nits. The front is scratch-resistant hardened Ion-X glass. At one point, this Apple Watch has deteriorated and that is the back of composite instead of ceramics. The rings around the heartbeat sensor are also no longer made of metal.
